Newbie Checklist

You’ve made the decision to move to the UAE. Now what? We’ve put together a list of “must-do’s” to help ease your transition:

To Do BEFORE you move here:

  • Get ALL official papers (i.e. marriage/birth certificates and academic qualifications) authenticated/legalised in the country of issue. You can do it here, but the effort is exponentially greater – trust us.
  • Put Skype on all of your computers and/or a USB – you won’t be able to download it here.
  • Get a VPN for your computer.
  • Get an e-reader – books here are very expensive, and the selection isn’t that great in Al Ain
  • Get any needed immunizations for your family
  • Get a final health/dental check-up before leaving so you have time to find an appropriate doctor to receive care from.

To do once you’re here:

  • Get no less than 30 passport photos each, with a white background. You will be asked for multiple photos while registering for visas, schools, clubs and hotel memberships.
  • Get a water cooler and set up home delivery with a bottled service.
  • Get a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher for your home. Directgov has advice on how many you should have and the types of detectors available.
  • Get your Emirates ID card. Click here for more information
